Vary your Exercise
Now we all know that physical activity is important for so many reasons, so why are there so many people that don’t do enough of it? Maybe it’s our personalities that determines our relationship with exercise.
Indeed, new research is linking our different personalities with different exercise preferences. More than 800 adults were asked a recent survey about their motives to exercise and the results were interesting. People who are more outgoing tend to prefer exercising more publicly, like going to the gym or joining a running club. Those who have objective and logical thinking styles prefer having set routines and often set exercise goals. And those who like to think creatively and enjoy being spontaneous will be most likely to exercise outdoors and have more diversity of activities such as running, cycling and hiking.
The most important thing we should learn from this is that there lots of ways to meet the recommended physical activity guidelines of reaching a minimum of 150 minutes a week, and to get more people reaching this target more regularly, the crucial ingredient is enjoyment.
The reasons why we enjoy exercise probably outnumber the choices of activities that we could do. The key thing to do is find things you can sustainably do that fits into your schedule. Exercising effectively can be done without equipment, within very little space, and it doesn’t require much time.
You just got to make it fun to make it work.
This week’s challenge is to do 5 different activities such as walk, run, swim, cycle, yoga, strength train, play sport over the next 7 days. Make sure it’s fun and see if you can involve a few friends or family too. Let me know what you end up doing and how you get on.
